Our story
At Snug Lug we set out to make waves in the infant car seat world. They are heavy, awkward, and frustrating to carry. Some companies have developed a seat that converts into a stroller to combat this issue. They come at a hefty price tag though and are unaffordable to many consumers. The rest have been left to the old fashioned way. The worst way to carry them is in the elbow or swinging them by the handle as they crash into your legs. A better method is wrapping your arm around the handle and grabbing onto the outside of the seat. You can carry it up higher on your hip where you have more strength and a better grip. The problem with this hold is the seat wasn't designed to be carried that way. It doesn't sit level and it puts a lot of pressure on your arm. So we wanted to design a seat that was made to be carried! It needs a hand hold on the side of the seat so you can carry it as close to the body as possible. The hand hold also needs to be towards the bottom of the seat so you can lift it up higher off the ground away from your legs. We started out looking for a solution by experimenting with car seat handles. Our first idea was this new handle design that we patented. It allows the user to put their arm through a figure 8 shaped handle. We added a hand hold on the side of the seat as well as a hole in the sidewall on the bottom of the seat for a place to grab onto.
The design worked well and we reached out to manufacturers hoping to bring this concept to life. The time, cost, and safety requirements associated with this project were too great so we went back to the drawing board. Is there something we can make that would have all the benefits of our design but without changing the seat? Could we make it affordable for everyone? Is there a way to make it a universal fit to accommodate all the car seat brands? YES, YES, and YES! The Snug Lug car seat strap was born and it was everything we were looking for:
